How to make your own micro-greens

Microgreens are super healthy and super easy to grow! Maybe you remember making cress yourself when you were young. And it is really so simple like every 6-year old can do it!


Why should I grow microgreens?

And an increase in health awareness and the joy of growing greenery in your own home has brought the micro-green trend back. Furthermore, it is space-, time- and money-saving and you have as an outcome something you have grown yourself (we can tell you, you will feel really proud of it). The most popular micro-green has been cress, having an amazing distinctive peppery taste.

How do I make microgreens?

For the magic to happen, three simple ingredients are needed: the seed (obviously), something to grow them on – like a thick layer of kitchen paper or some soil, if you want to do it waste-free. And water. That’s it.

Make the kitchen paper wet, put it on a plate, or a not too high bowl so that you can cut the cress later easily. Spread the seeds equally on it, pay attention that they are not too close, so no mold can be formed.

Add some fresh water every day and make sure that the kitchen paper is permanently moist but not wet.

How long do I need to wait before I can eat the sprouts?

It should take around 2-3 days for the seeds to sprout. Once they have grown a bit, you can get rid of the seed (after 6-7 days) by cutting them off.

If I have problems finding cress seeds, what alternatives can I use?

You can use different seeds like mustard seeds, coriander seeds, mint seeds, mung beans, but also chia seeds.

Once the seeds are a bit bigger, it is recommended to soak them for a few hours. This is going to help the seeds to sprout more easily.

How do I eat the microgreens?

Do not cook them but eat them raw so that no vitamins are getting lost. For example, you could use them as a topping for your salad or, to experience their real taste, try them on a slice of bread with plain butter or margarine (add some extra salt if you want).
